We Get to the Root Cause of Challenges in the Classroom
Before tutoring begins, we conduct an initial assessment to understand your child’s challenges and where to start their program.
From there, we offer a range of specialised tutoring services - both group and 1 to 1 - for reading, writing and maths.

Initial Assessment
We start with an initial assessment that we can better understand exactly what your child needs are. This helps us match your child’s learning profile to the right intervention.
Results Analysis
Results from the initial assessment are analysed to determine gaps in the current skills, allowing us to tailor an individual learning program.
Personalised Learning Program
Each program is evidence-based and uses a direct instruction approach. This includes using hands on materials to aid learning. Their program is designed to target specific gaps to build a strong foundation.
Having an individual program allows for flexibility which enables us to work with the classroom teacher if specific topics need to be reviewed with the student.

All students are assessed or reviewed regularly over the term for their reading fluency, spelling improvement or topic recall (Maths). When students do not
improve at the rate we expect, further investigation and program modifications are introduced. Each term tutors and the director meet to discuss student progress.

Finding out that I think differently was important, but more importantly, understanding dyslexic strengths helped me understand my success. At Canberra Learning & Development Centre (CLDC), we use this information to create a tailored approach that meets individual needs. When you share your diagnosis report with us, our team will review it carefully to identify the most effective strategies, accommodations, and goals for your Individual Learning Plan. Our focus is on building confidence, strengthening skills, and providing practical strategies that make learning more achievable and enjoyable.
I don’t have a diagnosis, what do I do?
Learn MoreIf you don’t yet have a diagnosis but suspect a learning difficulty, the best place to start is with an Initial Assessment at CLDC. This session helps us understand your current reading, writing, and numeracy skills, and determine whether further testing is needed. From there, we can recommend the most appropriate screening or full diagnostic assessment, such as for dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia. Our goal is to guide you through each step of the process so you feel informed, supported, and confident about the next steps in your learning journey.

Our sessions are one-on-one or held in small groups to allow for individual attention and personalised instruction. Each session is structured around evidence-based teaching methods, with a focus on encouragement, progress, and confidence-building. We understand that learning differences can sometimes make traditional classrooms challenging, so our tutors work patiently and adapt their approach to suit each student’s needs,helping them feel comfortable, capable, and motivated to succeed.
What happens in a tutoring session?

They integrate technology, like Symphony Mathematics, Lexia Learning, Word, and Numbershark—to make lessons engaging. For older students or those with specific learning challenges, the centre uses metacognitive strategies, graphic organisers, and discovery learning to develop independent thinking.
