Specialist Tutoring

We Get to the Root Cause of Challenges in the Classroom

Before tutoring begins, we conduct an initial assessment to understand your child’s challenges and where to start their program.

From there, we offer a range of specialised tutoring services - both group and 1 to 1 - for reading, writing and maths.

Our Process

Initial Assessment

We start with an initial assessment that we can better understand exactly what your child needs are. This helps us match your child’s learning profile to the right intervention.

Results Analysis

Results from the initial assessment are analysed to determine gaps in the current skills, allowing us to tailor an individual learning program.

Personalised Learning Program

Each program is evidence-based and uses a direct instruction approach. This includes using hands on materials to aid learning. Their program is designed to target specific gaps to build a strong foundation.

Having an individual program allows for flexibility which enables us to work with the classroom teacher if specific topics need to be reviewed with the student.

Personalised Tutoring

All students are assessed or reviewed regularly over the term for their reading fluency, spelling improvement or topic recall (Maths). When students do not

improve at the rate we expect, further investigation and program modifications are introduced. Each term tutors and the director meet to discuss student progress.

AE

Understanding dyslexic strengths helped me understand my success.

How did finding out I am dyslexic at 38 years old change me? In one word - acceptance. Finding out that I think differently was important, but more importantly, understanding dyslexic strengths helped me understand my success. Knowing I am dyslexic gives me the motivation to keep being innovative! Being able to see objects in isolation, as well as how they interact with each other is unique and valued in the business community. I wish I had opportunity to be screened earlier by a practitioner like Marcelle from Dyslexia Canberra - if I know I was different at school I would not have taken teachers' comments like 'you need to work harder' to heart... if only I knew they were trying to teach me to colour inside the lines, instead of embracing my thinking outside the box?!

SJ

Thanks for being such a brilliant mentor.

Dear Mark, thanks for being such a brilliant mentor, teacher and friend over the past 9 years. You have taught me so that I think from now on I'll take charge.

PU

Exceptional help.

Thank you Marcelle for your exceptional help, support, assistance and tuition for J throughout the year.

GH

I now believe strongly in myself.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for everything you taught me. It made the transition into my new Maths class so much easier because I'm confident and instead of just giving up I know how to set things out and try to find a way around the problem. In the test I was calm and remembered many of the things you taught me to help me get the answer. I now believe strongly in myself and know I can strive to be the best I can be all thanks to you.

FAQs

  • Do you offer adult screening?

Yes, we do. Canberra Learning & Development Centre provides screening and full assessments for adults who may experience learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia. These assessments can help identify underlying challenges, explain past learning experiences, and offer practical strategies for study, work, and daily life. Our adult assessments are confidential, supportive, and designed to give you a clear understanding of your learning profile along with tailored recommendations.

  • I have a diagnosis, what do I do now?

If you already have a diagnosis, that’s a great first step toward understanding how to best support your learning or your child’s learning. At Canberra Learning & Development Centre (CLDC), we use this information to create a tailored approach that meets individual needs. When you share your diagnosis report with us, our team will review it carefully to identify the most effective strategies, accommodations, and goals for your Individual Learning Plan. Our focus is on building confidence, strengthening skills, and providing practical strategies that make learning more achievable and enjoyable.

  • I don’t have a diagnosis, what do I do?

If you don’t yet have a diagnosis but suspect a learning difficulty, the best place to start is with an Initial Assessment at CLDC. This session helps us understand your current reading, writing, and numeracy skills, and determine whether further testing is needed. From there, we can recommend the most appropriate screening or full diagnostic assessment, such as for dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia. Our goal is to guide you through each step of the process so you feel informed, supported, and confident about the next steps in your learning journey.

  • What’s the learning environment like?

At CLDC, we’ve created a calm, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment where every student feels supported. Our sessions are one-on-one or held in small groups to allow for individual attention and personalised instruction. Each session is structured around evidence-based teaching methods, with a focus on encouragement, progress, and confidence-building. We understand that learning differences can sometimes make traditional classrooms challenging, so our tutors work patiently and adapt their approach to suit each student’s needs, helping them feel comfortable, capable, and motivated to succeed.

  • What happens in a tutoring session?

Tutoring sessions are offered as both one-to-one and small-group formats (maximum of three students per group). The centre uses cooperative and multisensory learning methods to enhance understanding. Individual programs are tailored to each learner and delivered by specialist teachers, with weekly homework to reinforce learning.

  • What methodology guides instruction?

Canberra Learning and Development employs direct, explicit teaching combined with multisensory techniques in reading, spelling, writing, and mathematics. They integrate technology, like Symphony Mathematics, Lexia Learning, Word, and Numbershark—to make lessons engaging. For older students or those with specific learning challenges, the centre uses metacognitive strategies, graphic organisers, and discovery learning to develop independent thinking.
